Nicholas “Nick” Arnold ’24 spent his summer in court learning the ins and outs of the judicial system. Through an internship with the Augusta County (Va.) Circuit Court’s office, Arnold worked under Clerk of Circuit Court Steve Landes to aid in a variety of the office’s day-to-day operations.
A philosophy and religion major at BC, the Grove City, Pa., native said his summer internship complemented his major and career aspirations to pursue the field of law post-graduation.
“Since my goal is to go to law school to become an attorney, this internship complements my goal exquisitely because it places me right at the forefront of the field of law,” Arnold said. “Philosophy majors like myself often tend to gravitate toward the law. This is mainly because the practice of critical thinking, good logic and civil discourse within the realm of philosophy are important skills in the legal profession.”
Arnold worked with the criminal division to issue witness subpoenas for various matters. In addition, he processed subpoena returns, destruction orders and destruction order returns. A long-term project that Arnold and another intern worked on this summer was sorting, organizing and cataloging evidence from different cases over the years within the evidence vault in order to convert the Circuit Court’s organizational system to an online format.
Arnold also helped the land records division by scanning plats into a database for record-keeping purposes, as well as sorted and organized a plethora of election ballots collected from the general area during previous election cycles. Outside of the behind-the-scenes operations, Arnold also sat in on several court proceedings to observe a different aspect of the judicial system.
“Overall, my internship experience was great. The environment was outstanding, and the people I worked with were wonderful,” Arnold said. “More importantly, the education that I received in this internship is by no means lacking, and I feel confident that I am not only expanding my network but also expanding my skill set to aid me in future opportunities.”
