Bridgewater College junior Seth Spire received the Esther Mae Wilson Petcher Memorial Scholarship for the 2022-23 academic year.

The $3,500 scholarship is named in memory of Esther Mae Wilson Petcher, a member of the Bridgewater class of 1944 and a former missionary to Nigeria. The grant is given each year to a rising senior in good academic standing who demonstrates leadership in campus activities with an emphasis on religious life.

Spire is a computer science major from Bridgewater, Va. At BC, Spire is involved in the Brethren Student Movement, the BC Spiritual Life Board and the Interdistrict Youth Cabinet, which plans a regional youth retreat for the Church of the Brethren hosted annually at the College. He is a member of Omicron Delta Kappa, a national leadership honor society, and the Flory Honors program at BC.

In addition, Spire is a member of the ultimate frisbee and disc golf clubs and the Seekers small group book study hosted by College Chaplain the Rev. Dr. Robbie Miller. In summer 2021, Spire completed a research project funded by The Research Experience @ Bridgewater (TREB) titled, “Developing a New Analytic Model for Combatting CRISES,” a comprehensive review of data analytics and machine-learning models being used to deal with large-scale medical crises such as a pandemic.

Spire hopes to complete a year of service through the Brethren Volunteer Service before working in the technology industry upon his graduation from BC in 2023.
