Bridgewater College’s Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Band, under the direction of Dr. Christine Carrillo, will perform at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 5, in Cole Hall on the College’s campus. This concert is the premier performance for the College’s Jazz Band, a new ensemble to allow students to learn the basic jazz styles regardless of instrument played.
The concert will open with the Jazz Band performing “Midnight Snack”by Rick Hirsch, followed by “Z’up Dude?”by Bob Turner. Featured soloists on the second piece are Josh Allen ’27 on vibes, Shelby Herrold ’27 on trumpet and Nicholas Rhodes ’27 on guitar.
“Unforgettable”by Irving Gordon and arranged by Roger Holmes will follow with soloists Parker Sale ’25 on vocals, Bryce Davis ’27 on trumpet and Anna Monfort ’26 on tenor sax. Allen, Herrold and Monfort will then be joined by Angelica Sanders ’26 on flute, Ewan Benjamin ’25 on trombone, Charlie Hale ’26 on bass and Brenden Bradbury ’27 on piano for “Bad Dog!”by Mike Dana.
The Jazz Band will conclude with “25 or 6 to 4”by Robert Lamm and Peter Blair. Featured soloists for the final piece are Allen on vibes, Sanders on flute, Jeffrey Robinson ’26 on drum set and Acacia Scott ’27 on trombone.
The Jazz Ensemble will then take attendees on a journey through the important cities in jazz history, traveling to California, New York, New Orleans, Kansas City, Mo., Memphis, Tenn., St. Louis, Chicago and Philadelphia.
The ensemble will open with “Take 5”by Paul Desmond and arranged by Dave Wolpe. Featured soloists include Robinson on vibes, Estrella Ramos ’27 and Rosie Clark ’26 on alto sax, Hailey Chaney ’24 on bari sax and Stephen Layton ’26 on drum set.
Following will be “12 Street and Vine” by Andy Clark with soloists Clark and Robinson joined by Itali Hoover ’27 on trumpet, Kwinton Banks ’24 on guitar and Owen Angell ’25 on bass. Hoover also is the soloist on the next piece, “St. Louis Blues” by W.C. Handy and arranged by Sammy Nestico.
The Jazz Ensemble will then perform another of Handy’s pieces, “Memphis Blues,” arranged by Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn. Clark, Chaney and Ramos will join Nathan Sullivan ’25 on trumpet and Joseph Sepulveda ’26 on clarinet as soloists. After, the ensemble will play “Chicago (That Toddlin’ Town),”arranged by John Edmondson. Conner Scye ’26 on tenor sax is the featured soloist on the next piece, “Take the A Train,” by Strayhorn and arranged by Gordon Goodwin.
The program will conclude with ”Freddie Freeloader”by Miles Davis, arranged by Les Hooper, and “Oh! When the Saints Go Groovin’ In”by David Samuel. Featured soloists on the final two pieces are Clark, Sullivan, Angell, Scye, Layton and Martin Stoner ’26.
The performance is free and open to the public.
