Bridgewater College Presents 2019 Education Awards

Bridgewater College’s Teacher Education Program presented two awards at the college awards ceremony.

Bridgewater College’s Teacher Education Program presented two awards at the college awards ceremony.

The Virginia Scholars Award was presented to Stephanie A. Brooks.

The award honors an outstanding woman at each of Virginia’s four-year colleges and universities who has demonstrated a potential for distinctive service in any field of education.

Brooks, a senior English major, is the daughter of Rice and Kristine Brooks of Waynesboro, Va.

Brooks is a member of the Philomathes Society, Bridgewater’s scholastic honor society; Sigma Tau Delta, an international collegiate English honor society; Omicron Delta Kappa, a national leadership honor society; and serves as vice president of the campus chapter of Alpha Chi, a national scholastic honor society.

For the past three years, Brooks has served as a tutor in the college’s Writing Center.

During the 2019 spring semester, Brooks is student teaching at Buffalo Gap High School.

Five seniors were selected as a Virginia Teacher of Promise, an organization that recognizes the best prospective teachers in the United States. Recipients become part of a larger Teachers of Promise network, whose purpose is to discover, recognize and grow the next generation of great teachers.

Selected from Bridgewater College were: Ashley M. Brady, Shane D. Brubaker, Jonathan M. Chudoba, Christa F. Craighead and Susan R. Payne.

Brady, a liberal studies major, is the daughter of Michael and April Brady of Clear Spring, Md. During the 2019 spring semester, she is student teaching at Churchville Elementary School.

Brubaker, a liberal studies major, is the son of Alvin and Tonna Brubaker of Rockingham, Va. During the 2018 fall semester, Brubaker completed student teaching at John C. Myers Elementary School.

Chudoba, a history and political science major, is the son of Michael Chudoba of Mechanicsville, Va., and the late Athena Bostick. During the 2019 spring semester, Chudoba is student teaching at Harrisonburg High School.

Craighead, a history and political science major with a minor in communication studies, is the daughter of Chris and Vicki Craighead of Callaway, Va During the 2019 spring semester, Craighead is student teaching at Stewart Middle School.

Payne, a liberal studies major, is the daughter of Stanley and Cheryl Payne of Harrisonburg, Va. Payne completed a student-teaching placement at Waterman Elementary School and is currently student teaching at Skyline Middle School.

All six seniors graduated on May 4. Following graduation, Craighead will teach seventh-grade social studies in Franklin County, Va., and Payne will teach kindergarten at Waterman Elementary School.
