An exhibition of mixed media artwork by Barb Brigham Mowery, a 2000 graduate of Bridgewater College, will be showcased at the College from Wednesday, Oct. 4, through Wednesday, Nov. 1, in the Beverly Perdue Art Gallery located on the first floor of the John Kenny Forrer Learning Commons. The exhibition, “Young Stellar Objects,” coincides with Bridgewater College’s homecoming events Oct. 26-29.
In this new body of work, Mowery breaks down the damage of being a frontline pandemic worker and surrenders to the internal gravity of her homelife. Mowery combines scientific knowledge about the universe with her own magical thinking about the human experience. This mission to construct an identity from the debris of her former self launches Mowery from the kitchen table to the farthest reaches of space.
Mowery, based out of Lusby, Md., has exhibited her work across Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C., and her paintings are in private collections in the U.S., Germany and South Korea. An English major while at BC, Mowery is currently pursuing a master of art with a concentration in community arts from Eastern Illinois University.
The art exhibition will have an opening reception in the gallery from 5-7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 9, with an artist’s talk at 5:30 p.m. The exhibition, opening reception and artist’s talk are free and open to the public. The gallery is open from 7:30 a.m. to midnight Monday through Thursday; 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday; 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday; and noon to midnight on Sunday.
