The Zane D. Showker Institute for Responsible Leadership awarded its 2018 Showker Prize during the annual college awards ceremony.
Established in 2016, the Showker Prize is awarded to an interdisciplinary team of Bridgewater College students who best demonstrate leadership, creativity, and collaboration in generating a unique solution to a difficult real-world problem.
Six teams began the process last year and, in April, the remaining three teams presented their projects to an audience of their peers, faculty, staff and a panel of judges.
The winning team was “Waste Watchers,” which sought to educate the community about the amount and impact of wasted food.
Winning team members were John B. Gieseler, Melanie Hux, Luke Morgan, Alicia Pritchett and Sabrina Volponi, who served as team leader. The $5,000 prize was split among the team members.
Gieseler, a sophomore business administration major, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Brian Gieseler of Azusa, Calif. Hux, a sophomore athletic training major, is the daughter of David and Teresa Hux of Poquoson, Va. Morgan, a sophomore political science major, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Morgan of Churchville, Va. Pritchett, a sophomore computer science major, is from Buena Vista, Va. Volponi, a senior environmental science and mathematics double major, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Volponi of East Elmhurst, N.Y.
