Major of the Year awards were presented in the following fields of study: Kimberly N. Beachy the award in health and exercise science, Jacob T. Moskowitz in athletic training, Hayley M. Nye in nutritional science, Alyssa R. Pearson in health and physical education and Elizabeth L. Watson in family and consumer sciences.
Major of the Year awards are presented to students who exhibit strong academic skills and substantial career-related experiences, as well as for being positive role models.
Beachy, a senior, is the daughter of Alvin and Karen Beachy of Timberville, Va.; Moskowitz, a senior, is the son of Daniel and Karen Moskowitz of Orange, Va.; Nye, a senior, is the daughter of Thomas and Lisa Nye of Powhatan, Va.; Pearson, a senior, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Pearson of Chantilly, Va.; and Watson, a senior, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Watson of Midlothian, Va.
Audrey C. Ferguson, a senior athletic training major with a minor in Spanish, received the Excellence in Academics award, which is presented to the student who demonstrates academic excellence and engages in the learning process in the classroom and beyond. Ferguson is the daughter of Robert and Cindy Ferguson of Lynchburg, Va.
Cole B. Talton, a senior athletic training major, was presented the Excellence in Leadership and Service award for demonstrating excellence in leadership, character and service. Talton is the son of Rob Talton and Jaime Sloan, both of Winchester, Va.
Clara R. O’Connor, a junior family and consumer sciences major, received the Rugby H. St. John Endowed Scholarship in Family and Consumer Sciences. The award, valued at $2,820, is presented to a student seeking a degree in family and consumer sciences with preference given to those seeking certification in secondary education. The award is based on scholarship, leadership and character. O’Connor is the daughter of P.J. and Jodi O’Connor of Mount Airy, Md.
Following graduation on May 4, Ferguson will pursue a doctorate of physical therapy at the University of Lynchburg. Pearson will pursue a master’s in kinesiology for individuals with disabilities at the University of Virginia. Talton will pursue a doctorate of chiropractic at Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa. Watson will pursue a master of education in school counseling from Liberty University.
