Four Bridgewater College students were presented awards for excellence from the Department of Health and Human Sciences.
Hannah Copp ’23, a family and consumer sciences major from Woodstock, Va., received the Health and Human Sciences Excellence in Academics Award, given to a student who demonstrates academic excellence and engages in the learning process in the classroom and beyond.
She is the president of the Educators Rising Club at BC, vice president of the coed leadership fraternity Alpha Phi Omega and a member of and officer for the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences Student Unit. Copp is pursuing a position as a secondary teacher within the family and consumer sciences field post-graduation.
The department also presents Major of the Year Awards in family and consumer sciences, health and exercise science, and health and physical education. Major of the Year awards are presented to students who exhibit strong academic skills and substantial career-related experiences, as well as for being positive role models. This year’s awards were presented to Copp in family and consumer sciences, Hunter Clever ’23 in health and exercise science and Vincent Leo ’24 in health and physical education.
Clever, from Waynesboro, Pa., is the team captain for the baseball team, a member of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and in the Philomathes Society. He will be attending High Point University this fall to obtain a doctorate in physical therapy.
Leo, from Crimora, Va., is an all-ODAC member of the men’s cross country and track teams. He is a member of SAAC, the student-athlete honor society Chi Alpha Sigma and the student-athlete mental health organization Morgan’s Message. After graduating from BC, Leo hopes to find a high school physical education role while also coaching cross country and/or track.
Kenda Dodrill ’25, a family and consumer sciences major from Bridgewater, Va., received the Rugby H. St. John Endowed Scholarship in Family and Consumer Sciences. The award is presented to a student seeking a degree in family and consumer sciences with preference given to those seeking certification in secondary education. The award is based on scholarship, leadership and character.
Dodrill is a SOAR mentor team leader on campus, as well as a student ambassador and co-president of the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences Student Unit. After graduating from BC, Dodrill plans to teach family and consumer sciences at the middle or high school level.
