Bridgewater College scored twice in the first two minutes of play and controlled play the rest of the way to defeat Shenandoah University, 4-0, in men's soccer action Sunday afternoon.Ivan Barisic scored just 43 seconds into the game to put the Eagles on the board. Chris Thomas then scored at 1:47 mark, giving BC a 2-0 lead. The Eagles added two goals in the second half, one by Matt Utz and the second by Chris Hulse to complete the scoring. Zane Lineberry played the first 85 minutes and recorded three saves. Travis Morris finished up in goal and saved two more shots. The Eagles, now 1-2, return to action Monday when they host Piedmont College. |
| Bridgewater College opened the 2008 football season Saturday afternoon with a convincing 34-13 victory at Averett University. The Eagles took the lead in the first quarter when Patrick Smoot hauled in a 19-yard TD pass from Hagan Driskell with 3:58 left in the quarter. The PAT was blocked. Driskell hooked up with Tyler Beiler on a 43-yard scoring strike early in the second period, making the score 12-0. The extra-point kick was wide. The Eagles defense then got in on the scoring action with a pair of touchdowns. Travis Marks picked off a pass and returned it 23 yards for a score and T.J. Montague added a 36-yard interception return for a TD to lift the Eagles to a 24-0 lead. Jared Miller tacked on a 42-yard field goal on the final play of the first half, giving the Eagles a 27-0 halftime lead. After Averett scored on a 4-yard run by Brian Daniels early in the fourth quarter, the Eagles answered with a 10-scoring pass from Driskell to Will Osborne. Averett added its final points with just 1:12 left in the game when Anthony Squillini hauled in a 42-yard pass from Steven Oristian. Driskell completed 12-of-23 passes for 187 yards and the three touchdowns. Seth Little led the defense with eight tackles and tackle Austin Icaza added five. The Bridgewater College volleyball team split its two matches Saturday on its trip to Juniata College.Bridgewater lost to national power Juniata 3-0, but salvaged the split with a 3-0 victory over Marymount. More information will be available later. |

Bridgewater College picked up its first victory of the season Saturday with a 3-2 double-overtime victory over North Carolina Wesleyan at the Meredith College Espirit D3 Invitational. The Eagles took a 1-0 lead late in the first half on a goal by Caroline Bundrick, but the Bishops tied the game early in the second half and then took a 2-1 lead on a goal by Meredith Hester with just more than 25 minutest left to play. Bridgewater tied the score on a goal by Ashley Andes at the 69:28 mark and the contest went to overtime. Just seconds into the second overtime, Andes scored the game-winning goal for BC’s first win of the season. Bridgewater is now 1-3 on the season. Bridgewater College senior Brandon Spalding has been named the ODAC Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week by the conference office.Spalding opened his season in impressive fashion by winning the Virginia Wesleyan Marlin Invitational. Spalding placed first overall with a time of 27:19.2, 30 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. |
Bridgewater College junior setter Tricia Davis has been named the ODAC Player of the Week by the conference office.Davis led the Eagles to a 4-0 record at the Emory & Henry Invitational and was named the tournament's MVP. The BC setter racked up 137 total assists for a 10.5 per game average. She also hit .400 on 10 kills against no errors to go with eight service aces and 43 total digs (3.3 per game). In the final two matches of the tournament, Davis hit a combined .444 with 74 assists and 29 digs in 7 games. |
Old Westbury's George Vilatta scored the winning goal in overtime Sunday afternoon to send the Bridgewater College Eagles to a 2-1 defeat in the Roanoke Invitational men's soccer tournament.Bridgewater took a 1-0 lead at the 65:08 mark when Matt Thomas scored on a breakaway goal off an assist from Chris Thomas. With less than 12 minutes left in regulation, Old Westbury tied the score with a goal from Justin Leakey. The Eagles are now 0-2 on the season. |
Buffalo State's Amanda Sauer scored two goals Sunday afternoon to lead Buffalo State to a 3-0 victory in the BC Women's Soccer Invitational at Jopson Field.The loss drops the Eagles to 0-2 on the season. In Sunday's other game, Catholic and Ramapo played to a 4-4 tie. |
The Bridgewater College Field Hockey improved their record to 2-0 after defeating Sweet Briar College in the championship game of the Mapp Invitational.BC got on the scoreboard four minutes into the game when Rachel Doria scored off a Brianna Jacques assist. Jacques then scored 10 minutes later. Sweet Briar's A. Keane scored at the 11 minute mark to make a 2-1 game at the half. BC's Jacques scored two more times in the second half. With 21 minutes left to play she scored unassisted and then two minutes later scored off a Doria assist. Kristen Combs finished the scoring for the Eagles after receiving an assist from Kirsten Ganslow. Bridgewater College senior defender Kathleen Tamberrino was named the tournament's most valuable player. The Eagles are back in action next Saturday, September 6th when they travel to Dickinson. |

Bridgewater College opened its men’s soccer season Saturday, losing 4-1 to Rutgers-Newark on the first day of the Roanoke College tournament.Each team finished the day with seven shots, but Rutgers-Newark made the most of its opportunities with a pair of goals in each half. The Eagles averted the shutout when senior Chris Thomas scored off an assist from Zach Cundiff. |
Bridgewater College finished as the only unbeaten team at the Emory & Henry volleyball invitational as the Eagles won two more matches Saturday to finish the weekend with a 4-0 record.Saturday, Bridgewater swept Milligan 3-0, winning 25-19, 25-23, 25-19. The Eagles closed out the tourney by defeating Merdith in four sets, 25-11, 25-18, 23-25, 25-15. Junior setter Tricia Davis was named the tournament’s most valuable player. Davis was joined on the all-tournament team by freshman Katie Baker. |
Bridgewater College opened its women’s soccer season Saturday at Jopson Field with a 4-0 loss to Catholic University on the first day of the BC Invitational.In Saturday’s other contest, Ramapo defeated Buffalo State, 3-1. Catholic scored on its first possession of the game when Diana Spadaro lofted a shot over the keeper’s head from 25 yards out to put the Cardinals on the board just 30 seconds into the contest. The scored remained 1-0 through the remainder of the first half, but Catholic struck quickly in the second half to take control. Caitline Brett scored two goals in the second half and Spadaro added another goal to complete the Cardinals scoring. |
The Bridgewater College Field Hockey team advanced to the Mapp Invitational championship game with a 1-0 win over St. Vincent on Saturday afternoon.The Eagles outshot the Bearcats 16-1. Bridgewater sophomore Kristen Combs scored 10 minutes into the second half to give the Eagles the win. BC will face Sweet Briar in the champioship game at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday. Sweet Briar defeated the College of Notre Dame 3-1. |

The Bridgewater College men’s cross country team is ranked fifth in the South/Southeast Region preseason poll released Wednesday by the United State Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches’ Association.The Eagles return senior standouts Nate Rittenhouse and Brandon Spalding to lead the way during the 2008 season. Both runners were first-team All-ODAC performers a year ago. In 2007, the Eagles finished sixth at the South/Southeast Region meet. Earlier this week, the Eagles were picked to finish third in the ODAC behind Washington & Lee and Lynchburg. W&L is ranked just ahead of the Eagles in the regional poll in fourth while Lynchburg ranks eighth. University of Texas-Tyler is ranked No. 1 in the South/Southeast region poll, followed by Emory and Mary Washington. W&L and BC come next following by Centre, Rhodes and Lynchburg. Trinity and McMurry round out the Top 10. |
Bridgewater College was picked to finish third in the ODAC men’s cross country preseason coaches’ poll released Tuesday.The Eagles, with returning All-ODAC runners Nathan Rittenhouse and Brandon Spalding, finished second at the ODAC meet a year ago. The Eagles received one first-place vote in this year’s poll. Washington and Lee University earned seven first place votes in the poll, topping the annual survey with 95 total poll points. Lynchburg College came away with two top billings and 83 total points. Bridgewater College was picked seventh in the ODAC field hockey preseason coaches’ poll released Tuesday.Lynchburg College, winners of the past two ODAC field hockey championships, was selected by the league’s coaches to win the title for a third consecutive time. The Hornets garnered five first-place votes and 60 total points. Eastern Mennonite University is just four points back (56 points) after picking up a pair of top marks. Washington and Lee University sits in third with 49 points and the remaining highest rank. Rounding out the poll were Randolph-Macon in fourth followed by Virginia Wesleyan, Roanoke, Bridgewater and Sweet Briar. |
| SALEM, Va. - Bridgewater College placed 75 student-athletes on the Old Dominion Athletic Conference All-Academic team released Tuesday. For the second straight year, the ODAC All-Academic Team eclipsed 1,000 student-athletes. Through 2007-08 academic year, A total of 1,056 ODAC athletes were honored from the conference’s competing schools with an All-ODAC Academic Award. Eligibility for the ODAC All-Academic Team is open to any student-athlete that competes in a conference-sponsored sport, regardless of academic class. He or she must achieve at least a 3.25 grade point average for the year to be considered for an All-ODAC Academic Award. | Six Bridgewater College student-athletes received recognition on the VaSID All-Academic team released Thursday. Named from Bridgewater were Drew Elkins (baseball, athletic training), Brian Remsch (men’s tennis, business administration), Nathan Rittenhouse (men’s track and cross country, physics, Hilary Teeter (women’s tennis, communications studies), Jeff Highfill (football, mathematics) and Brittney Wittmer (volleyball, biology). The Virginia Sports Information Directors honored 222 collegiate student-athletes for their performances both in the classroom and in competition as the organization selected the 2007-08 VaSID Academic All-State Team. The 222 athletes represent the largest group the organization has honored with the awards. |
Bridgewater College's Brooke Barham was recognized on the IWLCA academic honor roll released Monday. Barham will be a senior this year.The IWLCA announced that 172 Division III student-athletes earned Academic Honor Roll status for 2008. Players must have achieved at least junior year status and have a minimum GPA of 3.2. |

Bridgewater College head basketball coach Bill Leatherman has announced his retirement after 23 years at the helm of the program.Leatherman was hired as the head coach at Bridgewater College in 1985. In just his second season, Leatherman led the Eagles to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference regular season title with a 17-9 record. A year later, Bridgewater won the 1987-88 ODAC championship and earned a berth to the NCAA Division III tournament – the College’s first-ever appearance in postseason play. That team finished with a 24-5 record, the best record during the Leatherman years. Bridgewater made two more trips to the NCAA tournament. The 1995-96 team earned an at-large bid and finished with an 18-10 record. The next season, the Eagles finished with a 21-8 record and advanced to the Round of 16 in the NCAA tournament. Leatherman was named the ODAC Coach of the Year four times – 1987, 1989, 1996 and 2005. He was named the South Region Coach of the Year in 1987, 1988, 1996 and 2005. Following the 2005-06 season, Leatherman received the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Guardians Award for Advocacy. The honor is one of the top awards a coach can receive from the NABC. During his tenure at BC, Leatherman coached three All-Americans – Ramsey Yeatts, Dan Rush and Kyle Williford. His players earned recognition on the All-ODAC first team 17 times and the second team nine times. Leatherman’s 1989 team led all divisions in the NCAA in field goal percentage, making 55 percent of its shots. In 1992, the Eagles led Division III in shooting percentage. Leatherman finishes his career with 335 wins and 262 losses at Bridgewater. He has the most wins of any men’s basketball coach in the College’s history. He earned his 300th career win during the 2004-05 season when the Eagles defeated rival Eastern Mennonite. His final team at BC finished with a 13-13 record. Leatherman started his coaching career in 1966 at Staunton River High School and began his college coaching career in 1979 as an assistant coach on Lou Campanelli’s staff at James Madison University. In his six seasons at James Madison, the Dukes competed in three consecutive NCAA tournaments, notching first-round wins over national powers Georgetown, Ohio State and West Virginia.[-Statement from President Stone-] |
Former Bridgewater College pitcher Fred Duquette recently signed a pro contract with the Kalamazoo Kings in the independent Frontier League.Duquette earned a spot in the New York State League earlier this summer and was named a NYSL all-star. Since signing with the Kings, Duquette has made two relief appearances. He has not allowed a hit in two innings of work. |
Head Coach Michael Clark and the Bridgewater College football coaching staff would like to welcome fans, parents and former players to the annual open practice. The Pigskin Preview is set for Saturday, Aug. 23. There are a few changes from previous years “I think changing the Pigskin Preview,” says Coach Clark, “will both accommodate our fans and families of players who want to come back to visit.”The day will begin at noon with a lunch with the players and coaches in the Kline Campus Center (KCC) Dining Hall. Lunch price is $8 for adults and $5 for 12-and-under. “I am asking my coaches to host tables for lunch and that would give fans and families a chance to interact with them as well as our players,” said Coach Clark. At 1 p.m., there will be an open session with Coach Clark in Cole Hall, which will include a question and answer period and a review of the afternoon schedule. Following the Q&A with Coach Clark, fans will be allowed to sit in on a position meeting of their choice, as position coaches meet and talk to their players. These meetings will begin at 2 p.m. “By opening up our practice preparation meetings to these groups, I think we will be able to show people an inside look as to what it takes to get a quality product to the field,” said Coach Clark. Finally, starting at 3:30 p.m., fans will be able to watch a two-hour practice on the practice football fields behind Nininger Hall where fans will be given a close look at the action. Bridgewater College has been selected to host an intern for the NFLPA/NCAA Internship Program for the 2008 football season. The Eagles intern will be Larry Moore (pictured right), who attended Brigham Young University and then played nine years in the NFL as an offensive lineman.Moore will help coach the offensive line and tight ends. "We are excited that our program was chosen. I know well over 50 schools at the Division II and Division III level applied for these grants and I think our selection speaks well of our reputation," said Coach Michael Clark. "This fall it will be important that a young team is well coached. We will not have a big margin for error. Unfortunately, Larry Moore and Ben Taylor, who bring 14 years of NFL experience to our program, can't play for us. I hope our players can benefit from their knowledge and experience." Moore started 73 of his 96 career NFL games. He played for the Indianapolis Colts (1998-2001), Washington Redskins (2002-2003), and the Cincinnati Bengals (2004-2006). Taylor, who starred at Virginia Tech and was drafted in the fourth round of the NFL draft in 2002, played for the Cleveland Browns (2002-2005) and Green Bay Packers (2006). ![]() Bridgewater College graduates Fred Duquette and Nolan Shaffer have earned roster spots in the New York State League this summer. Duquette, a lefty, will pitch for the NYSL Federals. Duquette was 5-2 with a 4.60 ERA for the Eagles during his senior season. He struck out 42 batters in 72.1 innings. Shaffer, a righthander, will pitch for the NYSL Capitols. Shaffer was 6-4 with a 3.42 ERA as a senior. He struck out 70 in 75 innings of work. The New York State League is a developmental league for players who have completed their college eligibility. The games will be played this summer in New York City. |
Bridgewater College football wide receiver Brandon Copeland was signed to the Arena Football League's Philadelphia Soul on Wednesday, June 18. The AFL is the top arena football league in the country. Copeland, also an All-American track performer, finished his collegiate career with 127 receptions for 1,924 yards and 21 touchdowns. He ranks No. 2 all-time at Bridgewater in all three receiving categories. He was named All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference as a junior and senior. In May, Copeland was invited to and participated in a NFL rookie minicamp with the Cleveland Browns. He was named an honorable mention camper by ClevelandBrowns.com for "catching everything thrown his way." When asked about the opportunity, Copeland said "[There's] no rest for the weary. I only sleep on December the 32nd." He explained by saying "I have to stay on my goals at all times; you never know when your chance will come." Philadelphia is currently tied for the best record in the AFL at 12-3, and leads the league in scoring at 62.2 points per game. They lost their three games by a combined 20 points. The Soul will play the New York Dragons on June 22 to close out the regular season, and the divisional playoffs begin shortly thereafter. ArenaBowlXXII, the AFL championship game, is on July 27. The AFL is televised on ESPN 2, ESPN360.com, AFL Net, and local TV networks. Some games can be heard on Sirius Satellite Radio. There are 17 AFL teams and approximately 425 players on rosters. Copeland will be the fourteenth Division III player currently on an AFL roster. |
Bridgewater College senior Melvin Queen has been named the ODAC Male Track & Field Athlete of the Year in voting by the conference coaches. Queen shares the honor with Lynchburg pole vaulter Scott Decker.Queen, a senior from Chesapeake, Virginia, won twice outdoors at the ODAC Championships including a fourth straight title in the 100-meter dash (11.00 seconds). He also placed second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.94 seconds. Queen then teamed with Brandon Copeland, Tyler Beiler and Tony Konate in the 4x100-meter relay, claiming top marks with a time of 41.73 seconds. That time set a new ODAC Championships record by 0.01 seconds, replacing the 1998 Bridgewater team with a newer edition of Eagles. At the ODAC indoor championships, Queen won the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.48 seconds. In Wisconsin at the NCAA Division III National Outdoor Track & Field Championships, Queen competed in a pair of events, placing sixth overall in the 100-meter dash in 10.80 seconds. The Eagles’ 4x100-meter relay team also made the trip up north, but the Eagles’ time of 41.32 seconds fell one slot short of qualifying for the event’s final heat. |

Lynchburg College swept the major awards on the VaSID team. Elizabeth Perkins was named Player of the Year, Katie Bruce was Rookie of the Year and Dawn Simmons received the Coach of the Year honor. |
The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) has named Bridgewater College junior Nathan Turner the South/Southeast Region outdoor track field athlete of the year.Turner won the javelin, shot put and hammer at the ODAC Championships. He qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships in the shot put with the second-best throw in the nation. Turner earned All-American honors in the shot with a second-place finish at the national meet. |

Bridgewater College's Melvin Queen and Nathan Turner earned All-American honors at the NCAA Division III Track & Field Championshhip Meet hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.Queen capped a stellar career on the track with a sixth-place finish in the 100 meters with a time of 10.80 seconds. Turner finished second in the shot put with a distance of 54 feet, 6.5 inches. Turner also earned All-American honors during the indoor season. |

Bridgewater College athletics director announced Friday that Greg Spector has been named the new women’s volleyball head coach. Spector becomes just the second coach in the program’s history. He succeeds Mary Frances Heishman who started the volleyball program in 1975. Coach Heishman retired as volleyball coach following the 2007 season. Spector brings a wealth of coaching experience to the Bridgewater position. He has coached at various levels, include college, high school, club and international teams. In 2008, Spector was the head women’s volleyball coach for Maccabi USA Sports and recruited nationally for top-level players to play at the international level. He served as the team’s assistant coach in 2001. From 2003-2005, Spector was an assistant coach at Division I Marshall University where he worked specifically with middle hitters and blocking. Prior to that position, he was an assistant women’s volleyball coach at Urbana University, a Division III university in Ohio. Prior to accepting the Bridgewater job, Spector was owner and director of recruiting for Indy Juniors Volleyball Club in Indianapolis. Spector received a bachelor of science degree in applied sciences kinesiology from San Diego State University. He received his master of education degree in 2003 from Urbana University. |
Thursday was a day of near misses for Bridgewater College athletes at the NCAA Division III Track & Field Championships hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.On the men's side, Brandon Copeland qualified for the finals in the long jump, but came up just short in his bid for All-American status. Copeland finished ninth in the event with a jump of 22 feet, 5.75 inches, just 1.5 inches shy of the eighth-place finisher. The men's 4x100 relay team ran its best time of the year at 41.32 seconds, but just missed qualifying for the final. The last qualifying team ran 41.28. The women's 4x100 relay team also ran well but also just missed the final. The team ran 48.22 seconds with the final qualifying time clocked at 48.05 seconds. In the heptahtlon, Courtney Hartman was 13th after the first day of competition with 2612 points. Friday, Melvin Queen will run in 100 meter trials and on Saturday, Nathan Turner will compete in the shot put. |
Former Bridgewater College standout Jono Brooks is playing his second season with the Rockford Riverhawks in the Frontier League.The Riverhawks opened their season Wednesday with a 9-1 victory over River City. Brooks started at shortstop and hit No. 2 in the order. He was 2-for-5 with two runs batted in during the season-opener. |
Bridgewater College athletics director Curt Kendall announced Monday that Michael Van Horn has been selected as the new women’s soccer head coach. Van Horn succeeds Kelly Gregory who has returned to her native Canada to pursue other professional opportunities. Van Horn brings a wealth of coaching experience at both the high school, club and collegiate levels to the Eagles’ program. Since 2005, Van Horn has served as the assistant men’s soccer coach/goalkeeper coach at Bridgewater College. Van Horn was responsible for organizing and directing all goalkeeper sessions for the men’s team. He was also involved in many other aspects of the program including the recruiting process. This spring, Van Horn is coaching the women’s soccer team at Turner Ashby High School, a position he has held since 2006. He has led the Knights to one district title during his tenure. From 2003-2005, Van Horn served as men’s assistant soccer coach at King’s College in Wilkes Barre, Pa. Van Horn graduated from Christopher Newport University with a bachelor of science degree in exercise science. He earned his master of science in athletic administration from James Madison University. |
![]() Sophomores Andy Chrismer and Drew Elkins earned recognition on the ABCA/Rawlings All-South Region baseball team released Monday.Chrismer was named to the All-South Region Second Team at catcher. He hits for a .315 average with four homers and 36 RBIs. Chrismer and Elkins were both selected to the ABCA/Rawlings South Region Gold Glove team. Chrismer did not commit an error at catcher to finish with a 1.000 fielding percentage. Elkins made just two errors at first base and finished with a .995 fielding percentage. |
Bridgewater College qualified athletes in six events for the upcoming NCAA Division III Track & Field Championships hosted by Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Individuals qualifying for national competition are Nathan Turner in the shot put, Melvin Queen in the 100, Brandon Copeland in the long jump and Courtney Hartman in the heptathlon. Turner, an All-American performer in the shot during indoor season, ranks second in the nation going into the national meet with a throw of 56 feet, 6 inches. Queen’s time of 10.58 seconds in the 100 meters is tied for the fourth fastest time in Division III. Copeland ranks ninth in the long jump with a best jump of 23 feet, 4.5 inches. Hartman will compete in the heptathon were she ranks No. 16. Both of Bridgewater’s 4x100 relay teams will also compete at the national meet. The men’s team (Queen, Copeland, Tony Konate and Tyler Beiler) has the 14th fastest time in Division III at 41.50 seconds. The women’s team (Hartman, Jill Wattai, Sammy Mizerak and Samantha Phillips) posted a time of 47.83 seconds this season and is ranked eighth entering the national meet. The top eight finishers in each event earn All-American status. The national meet runs May 22-24. |
Several Bridgewater College track athletes improved their NCAA provisional qualifying marks Friday during the Eastern Mennonite University Last Chance Meet. BC senior Brandon Copeland virtually assured himself a spot in the NCAA Championships in the long jump. Copeland jumped 7.13 meters (23 feet, 4.75 inches). The 4x100 men's relay team also improved its chances of going to the national meet with a time of 41.50 seconds - the second-fastest time in BC history. The team of Copeland, Melvin Queen, Tony Konate and Tyler Beiler moved into the Top 15 in Division III. Eagles freshman Christina Rhodes also improved her provisional mark by clearing 11 feet, 7.75 inches in the pole vault. Rhodes set a new BC record in the event, breaking her own record. Other winners at Friday's meet included Stanley Peyton in the 800 with a time of 1:54.44, Nathan Turner in the shot with a toss of 16.42 meters and the women's 4x100 relay team with a time of 48.15 seconds. |
Bridgewater College sophomore Courtney Hartman set a new BC record in the heptathlon this weekend at Generals Combined Event Challenge hosted by Washington & Lee.Hartman finished the two-day, seven-event competition with 4,380 points. Hartman also improved her point total as a provisional qualifier for the NCAA Division III meet. This weekend's effort moves Hartman into the Top 10 in Division III in the event. |
Bridgewater College freshman Christina Rhodes met the NCAA provisional qualifying standard in the pole vault Saturday at Christopher Newport.Rhodes set a new BC record in the pole vault as she cleared 3.51 meters (11 feet, 6.25 inches). Jill Wattai placed second in the 200 with a time of 25.51 seconds. For the men, Melvin Queen placed fifth in the 100 with a time of 10.83 and Tony Konate placed third in the 200 with a time of 22.11. Stanley Peyton placed second in the 800 with a time of 1:55.24 and Nathan Turner won the shot put with a throw of 17.14 meters. |

Bridgewater College's Drew Elkins has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 3 College Division baseball second team.Elkins is a sophomore, athletic training major from Lynchburg, Va. Elkins, a second-team All-ODAC selection at first base, hit for a .343 average. He had 32 RBIs and committed just two errors at first base. He also made 13 appearances on the mound and finished with a 1-0 record and a 4.96 ERA. |
Bridgewater College placed five players in the All-ODAC second team released Wednesday by the conference office. Eagles selected to the second team were Mike Lenox (DH), Drew Elkins (1B), Aaron Read (2B), Andrew Chrismer (C) and Mike Graves (OF). Named honorable mention on the All-ODAC team was pitcher Nolan Shaffer. Brad Buracker was the Eagles’ representative on the All-ODAC sportsmanship team. Lenox finished the season with a .335 average and 29 RBIs. He tied for the team lead in homers with six. Elkins hit for a .343 average. He had 32 RBIs and committed just two errors at first base.. Read led the team in hitting with a .345 average. He had 32 RBIs and a team-high 13 doubles. Chrismer finished with a .315 batting average and led the Eagles in runs batted in with 36. Seniors Sarah Wade and Lauren Kondor and sophomore Colleen Schwind received honorable mention on the all-conference team. Wade was second on the team in scoring with 24 goals and 16 assists. She led the Eagles in ground balls and caused turnovers. Wade led the ODAC and ranked No. 7 in Division III in caused turnovers with 2.73 per game. Kondor finished the season with 14 goals and seven assists. She was second on the team in ground balls and caused turnovers. Schwind finished the season with 164 saves as the BC goalkeeper. She led the ODAC in saves with 10.93 per game. |

![]() The Bridgewater College men's basketball team has selected its captains for the 2008-09 season. Kris Cecil, a 5-8 senior guard from Amherst, Va., and Rob Rice, a 6-3 senior guard from Mechanicsville, Va., were chosen by their teammates to serve as team captains."Kris and Rob are two outstanding student-athletes and will be excellent team leaders for us,' Bridgewater head coach Bill Leatherman said. "Kris is more vocal and as our point guard has a true understanding of the game and the team concept. Rob is probably the hardes worker we've had at BC since Ricky Easterling and Kyle Williford." Also for 2008-09, the ODAC will be implementing an unbalanced league schedule for men's basketball for the first time. "This is something the coaches have worked toward for several years. We were playing too many league games and basically beating ourselves up," Leatherman stated. "The addition of Randolph College helped bring about the change. Our league is just too tough to play 20 league games. This gives us all scheduling flexibility." Next year's 25-game schedule features a Nov. 18 contest at Division I Radford University. |
Bridgewater College senior Melvin Queen met the NCAA provisional qualifying standard in the 100 meters Thursday at the Liberty Twilight Invitational. Queen placed fifth in the 100 with a time of 10.58 seconds to meet the NCAA standard. Bridgewater’s Nathan Turner placed first in the shot put with his best throw of the season at 56 feet, 6 inches. Turner currently ranks second in the nation in the event. Tony Konate had a strong showing with Top 10 efforts in both sprints. Konate finished eighth in the 100 at 10.91 and ninth in the 200 with a time of 21.80. Stanley Peyton and Jacob Griffin both placed in the Top 10 in the 800. Peyton placed sixth with a time of 1:54.76 and Griffith finished 10th with a time of 1:56.09. Nathan Rittenhouse took third in the 3000 steeplechase with a time of 9:33.20. For the women, Jill Wattai just missed the provisional qualifying standard in the 200 as she ran a 25.34. The 4x100 relay took first with a time of 48.35 and Sammy Mizerak placed fifth in the javelin with a throw of 102 feet, 4 inches. |
Bridgewater College placed two players on the All-ODAC first-team in singles and two doubles teams also made first-team on the All-ODAC squad. Earning first-team honors in singles were Jessica Hill and Alissa Michael. Hill posted a 9-2 record at No. 4 singles and a 4-1 mark when playing No. 3. Hill was7-3 vs. ODAC foes. Michael was 8-4 at No. 3 singles and 4-2 at No. 2. She finished with a 9-3 mark against conference opponents. Michael and Kelly O’Connell were named to the All-ODAC first team doubles squad along with Hilary Teeter and Diana Ricker. The Michael-O’Connell duo posted a 9-2 record at No. 3 doubles and a 6-2 mark at No. 2 doubles. They were 10-3 against ODAC competition. Teeter and Ricker played No. 1 doubles throughout the spring and finished with a 12-2 overall record. They were 10-1 within the ODAC. Four Eagles – Teeter, Ricker, Pipkin and Megan Mathias - were named to the All-ODAC second team in singles. Teeter finished with a 9-9 overall record and a 7-6 mark against ODAC foes while playing No. 1 singles. Ricker was 10-3 overall and 9-1 against conference competition while splitting time at No. 4 and No. 5 singles. Pipkin finished 10-4 overall and 6-2 within the conference at No. 2 singles. Mathias posted a 13-5 overall record and a 9-3 conference mark while splitting most of her matches at No. 5 and No. 6 singles. The Hill-Pipkin pair earned second-team All-ODAC honors in doubles. They were 10-3 overall and 6-1 against ODAC competition. |
Bridgewater College senior wide receiver Brandon Copeland has been invited to the rookie minicamp of the NFL's Cleveland Browns.Copeland was invited as an undrafted free agent following the conclusion of the NFL Draft on Sunday. Copeland's agent received calls from the New York Giants, Philadelphia Eagles, New Orleans Saints and Cleveland Browns. Copeland decided to go with the Browns, and will fly out to Cleveland on Thursday. Copeland, also an All-American track performer for the Eagles, caught 53 passes for 675 yards and nine touchdowns. He finished his career with 127 receptions for 1,924 yards and 21 touchdowns. He ranks No. 2 all-time at BC in receiving yards. Bridgewater College placed three players on the ODAC All-Tournament team announced Sunday at the conclusion of the conference tournament.Junior outfielder Kaitlyn Bowman, freshman second baseman Emily Morris and freshman third baseman Lauren Childress were named to the all-tourney squad. Bowman led all hitters in the tournament, hitting for a .571 average in four games. Morris hit .429 and Childress hit .333 in the tournament. |

The Bridgewater College women’s tennis team advanced to the championship match of the ODAC tournament with a hard-fought 5-4 victory over Hollins on Saturday. The Eagles will meet the nation’s top-ranked team, the Washington & Lee Generals, for the title Sunday at 10 a.m. The Eagles opened play against Hollins by taking a 2-1 lead after doubles action. Hilary Teeter and Diana Ricker won 8-3 at No. 1 doubles and Jessica Hill and Megan Mathias won 8-5 at No. 3. BC’s No. 2 team, Alissa Michael and Kelly O’Connell lost a tough 9-8 decision to Hollins’ Nathalie Faure and Maggie Bai. Bai and Faure picked up wins for Hollins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, but the Eagles win three of the remaining four flights to win the match. Bai defeated Teeter 7-6, 6-3 and Faure held off Michael 7-6, 6-4. Hollins’ other singles win came at No. 5 where Anne Ailstock defeated Mathias in three sets. Hill held off Sarah Budrus to win the third flight for the Eagles while Ricker and O’Connell posted convincing wins at No. 4 and No. 6. Ricker won her match at No. 4 6-1, 6-1 while O’Connell took a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 6. The Eagles are now 15-3 overall. |
The Bridgewater softball team watched its season come to an end Saturday night as the Eagles dropped a 4-1 decision to Virginia Wesleyan. The Marlins led 2-0 after scoring a single run in the top of the fifth, but the Eagles answered with a run in the bottom of the fifth to get on the board. Laura Barry singled to lead off the fifth and Drew Rutledge followed with a single, advancing pinch-runner Jessica Dunn to second. Dunn scored on a single by Jennifer Hall, making the score 2-1. The Marlins added a pair of key insurance runs in the top of the seventh and the Eagles went down in order in the bottom of the inning. The Eagles finish the season with a 25-15 overall record. |
Virginia Wesleyan defeated Bridgewater College, 5-3, Saturday to eliminate the Eagles from the ODAC baseball tournament. The Marlins took andearly 5-1 lead, with just one of the five runs earned. Bridgewater scored twice in the fourth to pull within two runs. Drew Elkins singled and scored on a double by Brett Howell making the score 5-2. Howell moved to third on a groundout and then scored on an RBI-groundout by Drew Easter, making the score 5-3. Marlins’ starter Gary Bulman limited the Eagles to one hit over the final five innings and finished with a complete game five-hitter to pick up the victory. Alex Foltz kept the Eagles in the game with 6.2 innings of shutout relief. Foltz allowed just three hits while striking out eight and walking none. The Eagles finish the season with a 24-17-1 overall record. |
Bridgewater College pushed across a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat Guilford, 6-5, and stay alive at the ODAC softball tournament. The Eagles took a 5-2 lead into the seventh, but the Quakers battled back and tied the score. Kaitlyn Bowman and Caity Butler singled to lead off the bottom of the seventh and Lauren Childress followed with an infield single. Bowman scored on a throwing error on the play for the winning run. Bowman led the Bridgewater offense with a 4-for-4 effort with two runs score and two RBIs. Childress, Jennifer Hall and Emily Morris added two hits each. The Eagles will play Virginia Wesleyan at 6 p.m. Saturday in an elimination game. The Marlins eliminated Roanoke, 1-0, Saturday. |
The Brdgewater softball team won its opener Friday before being sent to the loser's bracket by Lynchburg College.The Eagles defeated Roanoke 5-4 in an 11-inning marathon before losing the No. 1 seed Lynchburg 15-7. Jordan Burkholder drove home the winning run in the top of the 11th to lift the Eagles to the victory. Emily Morris and Kaitlyn Bowman were both 2-for-4 and Caity Butler drove home two runs. Ashley Gills pitched 10 stellar innings to earn the victory and Becky Schmidt hurled to the 11th inning to pick up the save. In the nightcap, Lynchburg belted four homers in the bottom of the first to take a 7-1 lead. Bridgewater battled back to within two, 9-7, on Bowman's three-run homer in the fourth, but the Maroons were able to pull away again for the victory. The Eagles meet Guilford on Saturday at noon in an elimination game. |
The Bridgewater baseball team kept its championship hopes alive with a 4-3 upset victory over No. 1 seed Lynchburg College on Friday at City Stadium in Lynchburg.Drew Elkins scored what proved to be the winning run in the top of the ninth on a wild pitch and Alex Foltz worked out of a jam in the bottom of the ninth to preserve the win for Bridgewater. Starter Fred Duquette pitched seven strong innings to keep the Eagles in the game. Duquette allowed three runs on five hits. He struck out five and walked five. Foltz pitched two scoreless innings to pick up the victory for the Eagles. Bridgewater will meet Virginia Wesleyan at 3 p.m. Saturday afternoon in an elimination game. |

Randolph-Macon shut out the Bridgewater College Eagles, 4-0, in the opening round of the ODAC baseball tournament Thursday at City Stadium in Lynchburg.Randolph-Macon's Byron Mendenhall and Nick Simons combined to blank the Eagles on seven hits. Mendenhall pitched solid stellar innings, allowing five hits. He struck out 12 and walked just one. Simons allowed two hits in two scoreless innings to pick up the save. Mendenhall and BC's Nolan Shaffer matched zeroes until the Yellow Jackets took the lead in the fifth. With one out, Bruno Gora singled and took second on a wild pitch. Jay Lichter reached on a throwing error, but Gora was thrown out trying to advance to third on the play for the second out of the inning. Ryan Dickerson then walked and Kevin Davis singled to load the sacks. Shaffer hit Adam Carpenter with a pitch to force in the first run and Greg Meleski worked Shaffer for a bases-loaded walk to make the score 2-0. The Yellow Jackets increased the lead in the sixth when Michael Wallace doubled, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a dropped fly ball, giving R-MC a 3-0 lead. The Bridgewater College tennis team is seeded second for this weekend's ODAC women's tennis tournament.The Eagles finished the regular season with a 9-1 conference record, trailing only undefeated Washington & Lee in the standings. All matches in the ODAC tournament will be played on or near the Sweet Briar College campus. Bridgewater opens play Friday at 1:30 p.m. against the winner os the Lynchburg College vs. Emory & Henry College match. The contest will be played at the Amherst Middle School. The Bridgewater College women’s tennis team clinched second place in the ODAC regular season standings with a 7-2 victory Wednesday over Virginia Wesleyan College. The Eagles got off to a fast start by sweeping the doubles. Hilary Teeter and Marlena Pipkin took a close 9-7 victory at No. 1 doubles. BC rolled in the other two matches with Alissa Michael and Kelly O’Connell winning 8-2 at No. 2 while Jessica Hill and Megan Mathias took an 8-1 victory at No. 3. Bridgewater controlled play at the bottom of the singles ladder, winning at No. 3, No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 to seal the win. Michael took a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 3 and Hill followed with a three-set victory at No. 4. Mathias at No. 5 and O’Connell at No. 6 dominated their matches. Mathias won 6-0, 6-1 and O’Connell won 6-0, 6-0. The Eagles finish the regular season with a 13-3 overall record and a 9-1 mark in the ODAC. |
Bridgewater College, seeded No. 5, will meet No. 4 seed Roanoke College in the opening round of the ODAC softball tournament Friday at 5 p.m.The Eagles and Roanoke split a doubleheader during the regular season. The Eagles won the first game of the doubleheader 9-6 while the Maroons took the second game, 9-1. Bridgewater is 23-13 overall while the Maroons are 28-8. If the Eagles defeat Roanoke, they will play No. 1 seed Lynchburg at 7:00 p.m. Friday night. If the Eagles lose to Roanoke, they will play Saturday at noon. All game will be played at the Moyer Sports Complex in Salem. |
Bridgewater College senior Jeff Highfill was recently selected for the National Football Foundation Hampshire Honor Society.The 2008 NFF Hampshire Honor Society is comprised of college football players from all divisions of play who each maintained a 3.2 grade point average or better. A total of 439 players from 226 schools qualified for membership in the society's second year, an increase of more than 25 percent from the inaugural class in 2007. The NFF Hampshire Honor Society capitalizes on the NFF's current National Scholar-Athlete program, greatly expanding the number os scholar-athletes the NFF can recognize each year and further strengthening its leadership role in encouraging academic performance by the student-athletes who play football at the more than 700 colleges and universities with football programs. Highfill was twice named the ODAC Football Scholar-Athlete of the Year. He was named to the 2006 Academic All-American first team and was a second team Academic All-American pick in 2007. |
Bridgewater College freshman Jordan Burkholder was named to the VaSID College Division all-state women's basketball team released Wednesday.Burkholder, the ODAC Freshman of the Year and the Most Outstanding Player at the ODAC Tournament, led the Eagles in scoring this past season with 14.8 average. She also averaged 5.0 rebounds and led the team in steals with 97 and assists with 75. |
Bridgewater College’s Mike Redwood shot a final round 76 Monday to finish fourth at the ODAC Golf Championship played at Poplar Grove Golf Course. Redwood finished with a three-day total of 225 three shots behind individual medalist Nathaniel James of Washington & Lee. As a team, the Eagles posted a 313 on the final day of competition and finished in seventh place. W&L won the team title and claimed the automatic bid to the NCAA tournament with a three-day total 909. Guilford finished in second place, 10 strokes behind the Generals. Redwood was named to the all-tournament team and also received All-ODAC honorable mention. BC senior Shawn Harper was named to the All-ODAC first team. Harper finished the year with a 76.8 scoring average. Bridgewater’s Adam Rhodes and Guilford’s Brian Creghan were named Sportsmen of the Year. W&L’s James was named the ODAC Player of the Year and the ODAC/Farm Bureau Scholar Athlete of the Year. W&L’s Gavin Colliton was named the ODAC Coach of the Year and Randolph-Macon’s Michael Shrader was named Rookie of the Year. |

Bridgewater College has released its 2008 football schedule with a pair of new opponents on the the slate.The Eagles will open the season on the road at Averett before returning to Jopson Field to host Shenandoah and Ferrum. BC will conclude the non-conference portion of its schedule on the road against Lycoming. Bridgewater's Mike Redwood fired one of Sunday's best rounds to move into fourth place at the ODAC Men's Golf Championship at Poplar Grove Golf Club.Redwood finished with a 71 Sunday for a two-day total of 149. Redwood is four strokes behind individual leader Nathaniel James of W&L. James turned in the best round Sunday with a 70. The Eagles continued to struggle as a team, shooting a 314 Sunday to drop to seventh place with a 639 total. BC is just 11 strokes behind third-place teams Randolph-Macon and Hampden-Sydney. W&L holds a commanding 28-shot lead over Guilford College in the team standings. |

The Bridgewater College men’s track team ended Lynchburg College’s 10-year domination of ODAC outdoor track and field as the Eagles won the ODAC Championship meet Saturday at Roanoke College. The Eagles also awarded two of the conference's top honors as Shane Stevens was named Men's Outdoor Track Coach of the Year and Damien Ward was named Rookie of the Year. Saturday's honor marked the seventh time Stevens has been named the men's outdoor track coach of the year. He also received the top coaching honor this year during the indoor season. The Eagles held a 72-29 lead over Lynchburg after the first day of events and the deficit proved to be too much for the Hornets to overcome. Bridgewater finished with 232 points while the Hornets finished with 200. On Saturday, the Eagles dominated the sprints. In the 100, Melvin Queen made history when he became the first male athlete to win the 100 four straight years. Queen won Saturday’s event with a time of 11.00. The Eagles made it a 1-2-3 finish with Tony Konate taking second and Brandon Copeland third. Tyler Beiler finished fifth for BC. In the 200, Konate won the event with a time of 21.86 and Queen placed second. Stanley Peyton took a pair of third place finishes in the 400 and 800 and Jacob Griffin placed fourth in both the 800 and 1500. Nathan Rittenhouse finished a grueling three days in the distance events. One day after winning the 3000 meter steeplechase, Rittenhouse placed third in the 1500 and fourth in the 5000. BC also fared well in the hurdles. In the 110 hurdles, JT Painter placed second with Damien Ward in third and Keenan Fenwick sixth. Ward came back to add a fourth-place finish in the 400 hurdles. The BC relay teams also turned in big efforts. The men’s 4x100 finished first with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 41.73 seconds. The runners were Queen, Konate, Copeland and Beiler. The time was also a new championship meet record. The 4x400 ran its best time of the season to finish second. Running a 3:26.34 were Julius Delbridge, Ward, Peyton and Griffin. In the field events, Nathan Turner made it a clean sweep in the throws by winning the discus with a distance 44.61 meters. Thomas Bell placed third and C.J. Thomas was fifth in the discus for BC. Turner won the shot and hammer on Friday. His winning shot put effort of 16.69 meters was a new championship meet record and a new ODAC overall record for the event. The Eagles took three places in both the triple jump and javelin. Leigh Bradley placed second in the triple jump followed by Donte Montague in the third and Jeremy Lewis in sixth. Josh King placed third in the javelin followed by Matt Armstrong in fifth and Fenwick in the sixth. Rounding out the BC scoring were John Harris and Armstrong who placed fourth and fifth in the pole vault. The women’s track team finished the day with a solid third-place team showing. Bridgewater finished with 80 points, trailing Roanoke with 218 and Washington & Lee with 149. Sophomore Courtney Hartman paced the Eagles with a strong overall effort. Hartman placed in six different individual events and ran a leg on the winning 4x400 relay and the second-place 4x100 relay. Saturday, Hartman placed fourth in the 100, second in the 200, sixth in the 100 hurdles and fifth in the javelin. The highlight of the meet for the Eagles came in the 4x100 where they battled Roanoke. Roanoke entered the event with the best time in the nation and they bettered that mark, winning Saturday with a time of 46.84. The Eagles placed second with a time of 47.83 – the fourth-fastest time in the nation. Running for BC were Hartman, Jill Wattai, Samantha Phillips and Sammy Mizerak. The time was a new BC record and met the NCAA provisional qualifying mark. The same four runners won the 4x400 relay with a time of 4:09.64. The Eagles had one individual champion Saturday when freshman Christina Rhodes won the pole vault, clearing the bat at 3.21 meters. Wattai, Samantha Phillps, Mizerak and Nicole Phillips each placed in two individual events Saturday. Wattai was sixth in 100 and third in the 200. Samantha Phillips placed sixth in the 200 and fourth in the 400. Mizerak took fifth in the 400 hurdles and second in the javelin. Nicole Phillips finished sixth in the 400 and third in the pole vault. [Final Results] |
The Bridgewater College golf team was in sixth place at the ODAC Golf Championships after Saturday's first-round at Poplar Grove Golf Club.Washington & Lee led after Round 1 with a 302 total followed by Hampden-Sydney at 310, Roanoke with a 320, Guilford with a 321, Randolph-Macon at 323 and the Eagles at 325. Virginia Wesleyan with a 330 total and Emory & Henry with a 394 rounded out the first-day standings. Sunday's second round is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. |
Lynchburg College swept an ODAC baseball doubleheader Saturday from Bridgewater College, winning the opener 3-0 and then taking the second game 7-6 in 10 innings. In the opener, Joe Devlin improved to 7-0 on the season by blanking Bridgewater on a three-hitter. Devlin struck out four and walked one. Nolan Shaffer pitched will in a losing cause, allowing nine hits and three runs. He struck out four and walked one. In the second game, the Eagles jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first. Mike Graves led off with a single and took third on Aaron Read’s double. Drew Elkins singled home one run and the second run scored n a groundout by Mike Lenox. The lead didn’t last long as Jon Crews belted a solo homer in the bottom of the first to tie the score, 2-2. Bridgewater added two runs in the third and two more in the fifth to lead 6-3. Read led off the third with a double and scored on a single by Mitchell Edwards, making the score 3-2. Edwards scored on a single by Andy Chrismer to put the Eagles on top 4-2. In the fifth, Read singled and Mike Lenox belted a two-run homer for a 6-3 Bridgewater lead. The Hornets chipped away at the deficit scoring single runs in the fifth, sixth and eighth innings to tie the score. In the 10th, Lenox hit two batters after retiring the leadoff hitter. Blake Stokely entered the game and recorded the second out before a wild pitch allowed the winning run to score. Bridgewater is now 25-15-1 overall and ends the conference regular season with an 11-7 record.
