  • Duquette, Shaffer earn spots in New York league - 06/25/2008

  • Fred DuquetteNolan ShafferBridgewater College graduates Fred Duquette and Nolan Shaffer have earned roster spots in the New York State League this summer.

    Duquette, a lefty, will pitch for the NYSL Federals. Duquette was 5-2 with a 4.60 ERA for the Eagles during his senior season. He struck out 42 batters in 72.1 innings.

    Shaffer, a righthander, will pitch for the NYSL Capitols. Shaffer was 6-4 with a 3.42 ERA as a senior. He struck out 70 in 75 innings of work.

    The New York State League is a developmental league for players who have completed their college eligibility. The games will be played this summer in New York City.
  • Copeland signs Arena League contract - 06/19/2008

  • Brandon CopelandBridgewater College football wide receiver Brandon Copeland was signed to the Arena Football League's Philadelphia Soul on Wednesday, June 18. The AFL is the top arena football league in the country.

    Copeland, also an All-American track performer, finished his collegiate career with 127 receptions for 1,924 yards and 21 touchdowns. He ranks No. 2 all-time at Bridgewater in all three receiving categories. He was named All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference as a junior and senior.

    In May, Copeland was invited to and participated in a NFL rookie minicamp with the Cleveland Browns. He was named an honorable mention camper by ClevelandBrowns.com for "catching everything thrown his way."

    When asked about the opportunity, Copeland said "[There's] no rest for the weary. I only sleep on December the 32nd." He explained by saying "I have to stay on my goals at all times; you never know when your chance will come."

    Philadelphia is currently tied for the best record in the AFL at 12-3, and leads the league in scoring at 62.2 points per game. They lost their three games by a combined 20 points.

    The Soul will play the New York Dragons on June 22 to close out the regular season, and the divisional playoffs begin shortly thereafter. ArenaBowlXXII, the AFL championship game, is on July 27.

    The AFL is televised on ESPN 2, ESPN360.com, AFL Net, and local TV networks. Some games can be heard on Sirius Satellite Radio.

    There are 17 AFL teams and approximately 425 players on rosters. Copeland will be the fourteenth Division III player currently on an AFL roster.
  • Queen named ODAC track athlete of the year - 06/18/2008

  • Melvin QueenBridgewater College senior Melvin Queen has been named the ODAC Male Track & Field Athlete of the Year in voting by the conference coaches. Queen shares the honor with Lynchburg pole vaulter Scott Decker.

    Queen, a senior from Chesapeake, Virginia, won twice outdoors at the ODAC Championships including a fourth straight title in the 100-meter dash (11.00 seconds). He also placed second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.94 seconds. Queen then teamed with Brandon Copeland, Tyler Beiler and Tony Konate in the 4x100-meter relay, claiming top marks with a time of 41.73 seconds. That time set a new ODAC Championships record by 0.01 seconds, replacing the 1998 Bridgewater team with a newer edition of Eagles. At the ODAC indoor championships, Queen won the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.48 seconds.

    In Wisconsin at the NCAA Division III National Outdoor Track & Field Championships, Queen competed in a pair of events, placing sixth overall in the 100-meter dash in 10.80 seconds. The Eagles’ 4x100-meter relay team also made the trip up north, but the Eagles’ time of 41.32 seconds fell one slot short of qualifying for the event’s final heat.
  • Remsch, Radke named to all-state team - 06/16/2008

  • Brian RemschRyan RadkeBridgewater College's Brian Remsch and Ryan Radke, both juniors, have been named to the VaSID Men's Tennis All-State College Division second team.

    Christopher Newport's John Mook was named the VaSID Player of the Year and CNU's Rush Cole was selected as Coach of the Year. Hampden-Sydney's Rich Pugh was the Rookie of the Year.
  • Teeter named to All-State team - 06/16/2008

  • Hillary TeeterBridgewater senior Hilary Teeter was named to the VaSID All-State College Division second team released Monday.

    Washington & Lee's Katie Tabb was named Player of the Year and W&L's Eric Ishida was named Coach of the Year. Rookie of the Year was Lisa Dyke from Christopher Newport University.
