The breadth and depth of Bridgewater's academic programs can be found in our 17 departments, each offering students the opportunity to master their chosen subject area and gain hands-on experience through internships, lab work, research, study abroad, service learning, and classroom projects.
The departments at Bridgewater work closely together to help students make connections across disciplines. That -- in short -- is the whole purpose of a liberal arts education. Being able to draw on knowledge from a wide range of subjects makes you a well-rounded person intellectually and broadens your future career possibilities. For example, you might become an expert in biology, but because you've studied at a liberal arts college, you'll also know about art, literature, languages, history, music, psychology, and much more.
Some of our majors require students to take courses outside of the discipline, expanding on the connections that are already made within the major. For example, communication studies and business give students the option of taking philosophy courses. Family and consumer science/health and exercise science requires nutrition and wellness majors to take courses within biology, chemistry, math, and sociology. Information systems management requires business, philosophy, sociology, and math.
Collaboration and sharing of resources also occurs between departments at Bridgewater. Recent examples include:
- Biology and philosophy: confronted scientific and ethical issues of bioethics.
- English and communications: explored literary heroes in popular culture by comparing/contrasting literature's and the media's portrayal of characters.
- Political science and philosophy: studied the classical mind, analyzing the works of Plato, Aristotle, and medieval thinkers.
- Art and music: examined the music and art of Polynesia
- Biology and sociology: focused on the conservation, ecotourism, and social change of Zambia
